Hey guys, I’m new to AudioJungle and new to making background instrumental music. I’ve been producing Rap/R&B beats for over 18 years and have had good success with my own website and licensing my beats to artists.
Thought I’d try out a new style/genre so I joined AJ the other day and submitted 4 tracks which are my first “background” instrumentals I’ve ever made, now I’m waiting to get approved or rejected. I’m very curious about your feedback on these tracks, opinions, tips, etc. as this type of music is new to me. Thank you

We might like your tracks, but the thing with the reviewers is… They might not, I still yet to figure out what they consider good for this site and what not. But for example I like the first track “the Last Samurai” but they might reject it for the ending, that starts from 2;25.
Good luck though!

Thanks for the reply. Yea, I’ve been reading some forum posts and the reviewers sound like they can be a bit picky sometimes or not very clear when they reject a track so we’ll see.
While the site reviewers are picky, you will start getting a sense for what they are looking for over time. I think most of us have had to learn a bit of that over the last year (I certainly did) as the reviewers were guided by Envato to push for more marketability and quality - Both being very good things for an RF business! Based on your first submissions, you have the skills and imagination to fit right into The Jungle. I think all your songs are very entertaining and solid backgrounds with high quality. Let’s see what the reviewers think. Great start and good luck!

IMO, it’s almost all about commercial viability now, meaning, there are certain formulas, and a certain production sound, to commercial music, and the farther you stray away from these things, the more likely your tracks are to be rejected. Commercial viability trumps everything; even if you have a track that maybe isn’t so well produced/mixed but it is commercially viable from a composition/arrangement perspective, they will still probably accept it - this has happened to me. On the flip side, you can have an amazingly well composed piece of music that is also well mixed, but if your composition strays too far from sounding familiar enough, well, expect a rejection - this has also happened to me. The best thing anyone can do here is try to walk a fine line between commercial viability and some measure of originality. Now of course there are exceptions, because of genres they still accept music for like Jazz where you can’t just use the same I-Vi-iV-V progression or arpeggiated ostinato phrases over and over again, but those tend to be exceptions, not the rule.
But anyway, regarding your tracks, I’d say the second two will probably be accepted (although Inspiring Love might have some sounds/frequencies in it that could easily hit a reviewer’s ear wrong.) Your first two tracks start to push a little into “not commercial enough” territory, although I probably like The Last Samurai most of all, for its different soundscape. Maybe they approve all of them. Maybe they reject all of them. You just never really know in this place.

I think you will do just fine on Audiojungle. I’m just listening from my iPhone but everything sounds good and I’m sure all of these tracks have sales potential, although the second two far more than the first. I like your choice of sounds, obviously your beat making skills translate to this market. Good luck!

Definitely years of beat making and a few years of piano lessons as a kid helps a lot. Rap music today is more about the drums (hard bending 808s and loud hihats) and the melodies take a back seat, so AudioJungle gives me an outlet to create real melodies which is my favorite part of making beats.
Thanks for the replies guys, lot of good info and tips. Made another track today and submitted it, 5 tracks in two days now lol.

Gotta say Last Samurai was dope!
Thanks Wololo, I think that one is my favorite.

What did you use to write the Japanese ethnic parts and cinematic drums? Sample packs or…?
I used a few VST’s for The Last Samurai; Sakura, Edirol Orchestral, Helix, and some soundfonts. As for the drums, it’s just a lot of basic percussion sounds with heavy reverb; bongos, tabla drums, finger cymbals, etc.
May I ask what VSTs you’re currently rocking?
I’ve been using the same software for the past 15 years, I’m currently house shopping so once I get settled in I’m updating my entire studio.
Right now for VST’s I use Edirol Orchestral, ReFX Nexus, Alchemy, Helix, Sylenth1, and random soundfonts. My drums are just sounds I’ve collected over the years, I don’t use any VST’s for my drums/percussion.
Welcome to the jungle! Nice to see another hiphop based producer around! Commercially I think it’s wise to aim for contemporary hiphop I guess… but my advise is: Just make what you love and you’ll see: It’ll sell!

Hey man! Cool quality work from a guy with commercial hiphop and indie pop outside of AJ. Recommendation- I’d chop Happy Moments around 1:40 and use the back half, maybe repeating it again to create necessary duration. Has a really good calming feel and I could see it in ads. Good luck; this community is very supportive of itself and I think you’ll enjoy the ride.
