I sent my affiliate link to a friend who wanted to purchase a WordPress theme and he did, but I didn’t receive any commission on the sale…

Anyone else experience this before?

The two reasons you may not have got the referral are:

  • your friend had visited an Envato marketplace website before you sent the link to them - Envato places a cookie on the your pc when you go to one of the sites, and this blocks out referrals if one isn’t used on first visit.
  • the friend deleted their cookies so the referral cookie was lost before they paid for the item.

Getting Specific

  • Envato uses cookies to track users who have clicked on your link, so they must have cookies enabled.
  • If a user clears their cookies, they will no longer be tracked.
  • If a user clicks on your referral link and then later, they click another, the cut will still be yours.
  • Once a user clicks a link, they have 3 months to sign up before the cookie expires.
  • Earnings from the affiliate program appear in your Envato Market account just like item sales. Find out more about how to withdraw your earnings
  • Linking from Envato Market back to itself in order to gain referrals is not allowed. This includes bouncing links off other domains.
  • If a user has visited the Envato Market before and then clicks a referral link, it does not count.
  • The referral program is subject to a fair usage policy which, gives Envato the right to review all referrals.

I thought the cookies will be replaced with new ones from my ref link.

Although he did clear his cookies before I’ve sent him the link, he may have visited ThemeForest before…

I’m trying to figure out why aren’t the cookies replaced with a new ones when someone clicks your referral link… It’s bad affiliate model, don’t you think?

Why would they be replaced? The idea is to reward people for bringing new customers to Envato. If they’ve already been here, are currently a member, or have been introduced by somebody else, then it’s not very fair if you get paid instead of them.
