Had a developer load salient theme so I don’t know my license number or version. I want to update the theme by purchasing my own license. If I purchase and upload the updated theme will it affect the appearance of my website? Or even worse throw things out of kilter.

The main question would be about what edits/content/changes/customisation etc has occurred
If the previous owner modified the parent code then this will not transfer with the update.
Either way you need to be run a compete backup (of everything not just the theme) before trying to do this
Hello, similar problem here. The original dev is no longer available, and I’m hosting the site for the client. The version is very very old, and breaks when we update wordpress. I need to update the theme, and wordpress for the client, but do I need to purchase the theme today just to get the latest patch? What should I do?

Yes if you can’t get in touch with the original dev then you need a new copy.
Much better for the client to buy it so this doesn’t happen again.
Bear in mind that if there were customisation made to the main theme then these will not grenadier when you update.
