Seeing the overwhelming negative reception that the new category page update is receiving/received https://forums.envato.com/t/category-page-experiments https://forums.envato.com/t/category-page-experiment-update-new-category-page-design-for-wordpress/ and seeing that Envato is going forward with leaving best sellers on the first page of the categories, we thought some ideas to implement to help both buyers to get what they need and authors promote their newest items.
1- First of all, add in the categories dropdown two more options for buyers to quickly choose what they want to see. Instead of only “Popular Items” on top, we suggest to make it: Newest Items, Weekly Top Sellers, and Now Trending. Here’s a quick sketch:
2- Once the buyers are inside the main category, make it easier for them to filter to what they want. The new category page design experiment is a step in the right direction, but as we all know, people don’t wanna scroll to much to find what they want, so here are a couple of sketches we made:
Here, potential customers could quickly see the main filters and decide as soon as they enter the category page, instead of having the current dropdown that, let’s tell the truth, not a lot of buyers notice.
This also gives envato the opportunity to add exciting new filters with curated/handpicked items, like “handpicked new items”, “best sports themes” “best niche items” “Top New Files” etc! Think about the possibilities to give exposure to items that are currently buried that really deserve a chance to shine!
3- Revise Best Sellers results. One of the main problems about placing the best sellers of all time in the main page is that it’s showing really old and outdated items in the first page. For example, as we pointed out in the main topic, right now when people click the HTML category they find really old items in the first page, even from 8 YEARS AGO (last time updated). That sends a really bad image to customers. A quick workaround would be that the best sellers filter showed by default items added in the last month. That way people will still see the best sellers, but will also see items created in the last month, and if they choose, they can change it to see the best sellers of all time.
