Hi,
While processing Content ID claims, I came across some hilarious comments regarding claims. Here’s an exact quote from one of them:
“I’ve downloaded this track from envato elements official website and i have got my license too with it to use this track where ever and when ever i want.”
In my opinion, this reflects a lack of understanding among customers about how they are permitted to use our intellectual property. We are seeing a growing number of cases where users are adding vocals over our music, releasing it as their own, and more. This attitude of “Pay $16 and get whatever you want” is a misguided approach, leading to a false sense of entitlement.
It’s both sad and funny that this particular note didn’t even include the license code. It’s time to start educating customers on the responsibility and ethics behind their subscription. Why doesn’t Envato create a video that explains, in a simple, lighthearted way and healthy sense of humour, what the licenses cover? This could clarify what users can and can’t do with our intellectual property.

It’s true. Licensing is often difficult to understand, particularly when customers have preconceived ideas on what is and is not allowed. It’s something all stock sites struggle with. How to educate a customer who often doesn’t want to read anything and just click “buy”?

It is difficult to understand because it is made this way by you guys!
It could be made really clear in a few words but it is intentionally confusing for marketing purposes, the same applies to the Elements banner!

I think if videos, as I mentioned before, appear more frequently on Envato’s official public channels and if license terms are made clearer and simpler, we’ll be one step closer to better conditions. I’m also surprised that there is no official tool to verify the validity of Envato Elements license codes. Users provide us with text files containing these codes, and there is no way to check if they are real or fake. How is this even possible? Every software with a license has tools to verify if the license is valid, expired, or fake. But not in our case.

Agreed. It’s something we’re working on and will likely be getting your feedback on how to make it work. Making it simple is definitely our goal.

We can also add a simple line on our profiles encouraging clients to check the license terms. This of course only applies to the market but I guess anything helps?
