I bet the next step will be the big purge of all outdated, broken items, and the goal is to have only Top popular themes (let’s face it there hasn’t been any bigger change in top popular themes for years now) + Elements for the small fish.
Mate, I don’t want this to be reversed. This would have been amazing to be turned into a “Recommended” instead of a “Best Sellers” and showcase products based on sales, visits, reviews. Putting Best Sellers is like walking into the Volkswagen dealership and seeing 500 Volkswagen Beetle first before any new model because those sold better. Go into a Mobile store and see the Nokia 3310, before the iPhone at the same price with the iPhone.
In any case… I’m off, got to get back to work… Cheers guys and good luck mates!
All my posts in this thread have been my personal opinion as an author.
I don’t see any reason to display ‘best rated’ items because this filter is broken. Item with 3 ratings (5 stars in overall) has better position than item with 100 ratings ( 4.99 overall).

I think other marketplace’s owners are also celebrating this Envato decision.
Oxford dictionary must update due to this.
NEW: An adjective indicates that it used to be a new item years ago but it still brings money most.
Envato market, after all, is just a market, not a community who drives the art/design direction.
NOKIA must love this!
Hopefully, Envato can lead the new trend and Amazon should follow so I can sell my Nokia 3310 which I have been keeping for 20 years!
Oh… It’s a wrong path. It will be fun to see how it goes after a few years
It’s very sad to know what course Envato has taken.
I do not understand how you can want to get a small profit now, but completely kill the desire of authors in the competition and the creation of exclusive products that meet new trends and these actions kill the site in the near future.
Even now it is noticeable how the quality of goods has fallen since the beginning of this year and what will happen to the market in a year or two
As an author this makes me don’t want to be creative and make new items as they will get a very low exposure.
Pretty sure other authors feel the same which means this market won’t be a good place for buyers that are looking to buy new Design trends because authors won’t bother making them + Envato keeps showing buyers old items from ~ 2013…
It’s fun, but ThemeForest selling model implies cheap bloated items on top. That’s why there are many outdated and broken items on the market. Why author needs to create a high quality product? Why he should update old items if these don’t add any impact? A few other marketplaces for example has auto renewing support for WordPress theme. It encourages authors to pay more attention to their products.
Surely you can remove the “WordPress > Popular Items” section now, seeing as you’re plastering them all over the site now anyway?
Very well articulated post, @Enabled.
since @jamesgiroux ignored our previous posts in the other topic, maybe we’ll get better luck with you, @trent-aus
Why every time that Envato “experiments” always end up hurting authors? It’s like they do it on purpose! This change is a terrible idea, it basically buries the new items in favor of items that already have good exposure. It seems that the only thing Envato wants is to boost that small group of people that are already doing good, so as long as they are doing ok and help increase the overall Envato earnings, new authors/items don’t matter.
Please, tell us, what would be our incentive to upload new items, knowing that they’re gonna be buried below piles of already established items? how can we possibly compete against that?
Now is the time that some dudes from Silicon Valley or something to start or find some investors to kickstart a new marketplace. I am 100% certain that new marketplaces will rise after this monumental blunder from envato. It is just a matter of time!
It is time to change marketplace’s name from"ThemeForest" to “AvadaForest”
To be honest I am thinking about creating one - the only thing I’m not sure how to implement/code is payment system.
To make a marketplace work you need tons of $$$ for marketing like, in millions!
After this change, are you guys still going to make and publish new items in the market?
We have an item we’ve been developing for 24 months, and we have been waiting for the experiment to be over to submit it.
Safe to say we will not be submitting it to ThemeForest anymore. We’ve worked too hard to have our product buried in the zero-exposure black hole of new items.
Envato did that from scratch without any investments and authors made them live.
