I doubt I am posting this in the right place so sorry in advance.
I’ve tried 5 different Shopify themes from different creators and they all give this error
zip does not contain a valid theme: missing template “layout/theme.liquid”
Google says that they are missing a folder, but all of them?

Seems that you are uploading wrong .zip file. You should unzip package you downloaded from themeforest/elements and you will find another .zip in it, which should be called like your THEM-NAME.zip. Please try to install that .zip
