Why PS in print designs?

Hi guys…

I’ve used a lot of different design from this section during the years. In general high quality and design choices, that’s always nice so thanks for that.

I just have one question for you guys as designers. Why the use of PS instead of Indesign. ID are used almost exclusive for print work, but a lot of the design are only in .psd format?

thx
Thomas

hi beause this is much more simple and the supposed advantage of indesign as regard to the supposed quality of the printing of the typo is just a joke, people working in print will tell u how to save as a pdf checking the right option so that u get rid of the supposed pixeliated effect … besides i do know why indesign, a tool to set pages would be more interesting as long as u do not have multiple pages, like for a brochure with a high number or pages or a catalogue, or a magazine …
i have been working in an agency for 15 years now , i have basically never used indesign, so what?

So what you’re saying is, a tool as Photoshop made to edit, compose and adjust, well photos, is a better tool for DTP than a tool like InDesign?

Photoshop has turned into a sort of jack of all trades program. It does far more than just edit photos, it can do everything from digital artwork, photo editing, vector/print design, animated gifs, and even video editing. The software you should use depends on what you’re looking to do, for example, I would only use InDesign if I was setting up many pages with lots of text, or sheet of business cards.

i do not understand what u failed to understand in what i said in the first place but since u seem not to figure out what i was saying i will try to explain and make things even clearer than last time, if possible. Basically, what indesign was made for is to handle multi-pages documents like multi-pages brochures and catalogues. Thus, basically, there is no other purpose to this application (even if they tried to add an interesting webpage editing value to it a few years back) unless u have to handle this type of document. U can use it if u wish for other things , this is up to u, though this is useless , especially as long as your document is not a 8-page one at least , this is fine, but if u like doing things that make no sense at all, i see no problem with it … if this makes u feel better and make u feel like being a high standard professional, please go ahead, you are free to do. I know some guys feel like superior out of using indesign, as if they were coming from « planet excellence » and were top notch professional knowing it all about design, because they do. What a joke! (some of them are, yes, but not because they use this tool … some others are clearly not but have a « reason » to boast around because they use the almighty indesign, happy for them lol).

Though, you feel this is so much of a huge tool and u feel like u are so very much of an incredible designer out of using indesign, i do not know why other people would HAVE TO do the same … to please u?! everyone is free to do what they like, and this is better this way. Besides, why imposing the use of tool to people?! You do not think that we have restrictions enough already?! as long as they get the job done and that the work resulting from their actions is good, designers should be free to use the tools that they are using (customers will also be free to buy or not depending if they have what they are looking for or not , if they need to have indesign version or not and if what they want to buy is including it or not …).

Indeed, no one should have anything to say, because in this case, why not imposing to put web flyer versions or covers with flyers, also?! this is the same kind of thinking … enough! designers have already enough to do than multiplying things, we are not rich to spend additional hours and hours when we are all doing our best and spending much time and effort in what we do and are , for most of us , struggling to make decent money or being rentable!

Just like what happens with pc or mac, i tend to believe that people should feel like using what they feel most comfortable with … . If i am following the kind of logics that u are showing, then why not imposing pc or mac also?

U may say bla-bla-bla as regard to indesign supposed values but, let’s face it, the thing is of no particular use and is not indispensable indeed, no matter what.
First of all , u can handle multiple pages templates or creations without using it all the same (even if this is maybe the best way in this case)
Then, as for the supposed superiority of indesign in terms of printing typo / printed accuracy, this is just a legend or something that comes from « indesign loving extremists ». The fact of the matter is that most of the people would not be able to see the difference and no one as ever put their eyes straight on the documents to get to check if there is a tiny small dust of ink right next to characters, stop dreaming! no one does this! There are so many printed items with mistypings and so on inside, without people fail to realise about it, that this idea is just a joke! besides, i know what i am talking about … all my printed documents for the last 15 years are very well printed and no one as ever complained about the typo part or whatever else despite i was using photoshop or illustrator …
BTW, indesign is not indispensable unlike what u might say … not only illustrator can handle multiple pages , run chained texts and so on, but if u have the right knowledge and export the item from photoshop checking the right options when selecting the pdf format, then u see no difference at all (confirmed by several print shop owners, if u have a doubt about it …) …
Let me also add this, i have been working in an agency and we are both selling creations meant for printing and re-sell printings too , thus i have sent over 3000 things to printing and received a good deal of files that i have to control before sending them to printing, and what i can tell u is this … a lot of things that we receive made in indesign are flat designs (more than 95%) … and people should better do their work in photoshop or whatever and produce something more impressive visually! instead of playing the exceptionally gifted designers using indesign and delivering a flat thing in the best cases …

let’s add also that photoshop is not only a bitmap app anymore and that this is handling vectors, too

finally, most importantly of all, u may ignore it but a lot of professional do not have the whole adobe suite … so basically if u have only photoshop , please tell us what u do with your indesign thing … some have very old versions of applications, and , when it comes to templates being sold here, this, is in the best cases, when u resell to design professionals, photographers and so on … but let’s face it , a lot of people that are buying templates online are also people who are running their own business and buy from u directly - so not being design professionals - and why would they bother buying a very expensive whole suite of apps with a licence on every computer when they can buy photoshop only?! i also have news from u, this happened to me twice, i have been having customers who did not even have photoshop who bought my item and asked me to edit for them, because they had no tool at all to do it, what i did graciously for them, so u think that the concerned people will possess indesign?! lol stop dreaming, they do not even own photoshop, which is the most commonly possessed tool …

conclusion, if it makes u feel good, do even a business card in indesign if this makes u feel so very good but let other people do how they feel like doing, no need to impose additional things on everyone …

i hope this time i could make myself crystal clear …
