I bought the license for the pro version. Because the download came as a file folder rather than a zip folder, I have no way to install it. New to all of this, obviously. So I downloaded the free version thinking there would be a place to install the license code, and I sure can’t find one. Can someone help, please. Thanks.

Please download your purchased plugin from your Dashboard Download tab. Go to Downloads and download from there (Assuming you are loggedin in envato market).

Due to the subscription format and reduced pricing, products on Elements are sold as is and therefore don’t come with Author support. So, please read theme documentation (included in your download) hope you will get help there.
Just a small try from my side: please extract the download and try to install only the theme zip.

So it’s already warmer and how can I contact the author of the topic. Why there are no contacts who the author is and how will I contact him?
You’d need to check the author name on the item page and if it’s bought on elements then search for that author’s profile on it on themeforest.
That said as @mgscoder said - if this was an elements purchase and not on themeforest then there is no support included
