How to modify and upload a theme to Shopify

Hello Guys,

I just purchased a theme, and I was wondering how to zip it, so that I can uploaded it to Shopify.

When I try to upload the zip package, I get the message “zip does not contain a valid theme: missing template “layout/theme.liquid””

Are you sure it’s a Shopify theme?

I bought a theme not knowing it was not compatible with Shopify. I was wondering it if could be converted/modify.

Maybe but if it is not a shopify theme then that conversion is likely to be a big and expensive job

It’s unlikely, but there could already be a Shopify version of the theme for sale which could save you some headache. If you post the theme’s link we can check for you. :slight_smile:

Ah, it’s a brand new theme so there’s definitely not a shopify version out there. :frowning:

Hiring a developer to convert the template to shopify is an option, but it would be rather pricey (at least a few hundred dollars for a small number of converted pages). Unfortunately converting a template to a theme is a very time-consuming process that requires a lot of programming, hence the cost.

You could perhaps try asking the author for a refund, but do understand that they are not required to do so since you’ve downloaded it.

In the mean time you can check:
Seems that you are uploading wrong .zip file. You should unzip package you downloaded from themeforest/elements and you will find another .zip in it, which should be called like your THEM-NAME.zip. Please try to install that .zip
