Well, now days you can make music for free if you have a good computer.
All tools that you need you can get for free, sequencers like Reaper or Mu.Lab free are just few examples of what I’m saying.
Still, when comes to sounds people might find a bit hard to get the instruments they want, so, that’s why I make this thread (ain’t I a good guy?).

Native Instruments, one of the biggest music software producers, took the decision to offer for free one of the best samplers, Kontakt.
The free version, named player, is stripped off some editing options and can load banks specifically designed for the “player” version (I say it’s a marketing trick, a silly one). All sound libraries are managed in a convenient graphical library browser.
Together with Kontakt player you can download a sound bank offered also free.
UVI Workstation is a multi-timbral instrument that provides unlimited parts, integrated effects, live performance features, and a smooth real-time workflow.

• Works as stand-alone application
Some of it’s features include:
• Up to 64 MIDI channels
• Disk streaming per part
• Multiple separate outputs
• MIDI learn
• Complete professional effects arsenal, with easy editing
(delay, reverb, phaser, chorus, EQ, filter, drive, distortion, compressor…)
A sampler that blew me away with the quality of the sound is Shortcircuit by Vember Audio. Shortcircuit has been discontinued. It is now freely available for download, but Vember Audio does not offer any support for it.
Shortcircuit was created as a reaction against the ongoing trend where software samplers are being designed with the primary intent of library playback. It is intended for people who, like us, consider a sampler to be a musical instrument in its own right, and not just a way to emulate other instruments. It has been a very high priority to make sure that adding and editing individual samples is as fast and logical as possible.
There are curently two versions (well, f you count the “in between” versions then there are 3), my personal favorite is version 1.1.2 because in version 2 I got “tangled” in too many options :D.
Just found out that Cakewalk SFZ is free now O_o !!!
Outstanding sound quality, stereo built-in effects, adjustable CPU/quality settings to adjust it to your hardware, fully multitimbral operation, multiple stereo outputs, several loading modes including direct-from-disk streaming and a beautiful interface make sfz+ the perfect choice for SoundFont users and professional composers.
A nice and informative website about symphony orchestras, concerts, instruments, venues and conductors. A “must have” bookmark in the internet browser.
