Where can I get some decent instruments for Reaper?

I’m building a collection of instruments and samples that I need in order to compose music on Reaper. The problem is finding a decent starter kit, percussion, wind, string, etc. I need somewhere to start and I’d appreciate some advice on where to start, either for free or for a low price.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Right there. if you want it for free.

and http://bedroomproducersblog.com nice place to find some decent instruments, samples and third-party plugins.

You could also do the tried and true google search
That’s been my method and now I have thousands of instruments and plugins for reaper (though, I think I need to do some house cleaning).

I would think instruments that work within any open DAW platform would be fine. You could use the same third party VST or AU instruments that I use in Sonar. I don’t think the DAW is that important. What is important is knowing what kind of music you want to make. This should drive your instrument selections.

So what kind of music do you want to produce?

I haven’t decided yet, but I’m leaning towards orchestral. Songs with a nice melody, great harmonics, and a catchy tune. Songs like this:

IMHO, if that is the direction you want to go, you are going to have to spend some dollas (“r” omitted on purpose, I just can’t help myself).

Kontakt is a must and, if you are going to get that, you might want to look at Komplete. Kontakt opens you up to a large number of third party libraries that you can add as you can afford them.

I would then look at the first of the Albion libraries from Spitfire Audio. Symphobia from Project Sam is excellent but quite a bit more expensive.

If you want to do that medieval thing, then Era Medieval Legends from Best Service is a must. Forest Kingdom is also good, but I would go for Era first if the video is an indication of the direction you want to go.

There are demos for all of these and I have used all of the successfully in Reaper. I am on the current version of Reaper. My primary is Sonar (I just know it better) but I fire up Reaper from time to time because of its flexible routing and never have a problem with these.

Hopefully, Gareth will stop by here as he is chock full of information on sample libraries. Seriously, his knowledge is massive.

Hope this helps, my friend. Best wishes!

Michael

I ended up going to DSK and buying their instrument packs.

I’ll still be on the lookout for more though. Thanks guys!
