Hello,
I am planning to submit a theme to ThemeForest, which will take approximately two months to develop. Before that, I would like to release a lite version of the theme on WordPress.org.
If I publish the lite version on WordPress.org and it takes two months to release the full version on ThemeForest, what happens if someone else submits a theme with the same name on ThemeForest before me?
Can I claim the theme name since I already have a theme with the same name on WordPress.org? Would Envato assist me in reclaiming the theme name in such a scenario?
Additionally, does the same policy apply to plugin names on CodeCanyon if they are already published on WordPress.org?
Thank you!
It’s unlikely as these are two entirely separate websites.
I have not checked but I suspect there are lots of themes on wp.org that share the same name as files on themeforest

Envato and WordPress has similar “naming” policy : first one, first served.
But it doesn’t effect one to another.
On top, if “submission” to WordPress theme is as similar as plugins, you won’t be able to get the item reviewed not less than 30+ days anyway, during that period, you could develop your theme but it’s usually visa verse.
You create the theme at ThemeForest then upload the lite to WordPress.org.

My best advice is release the theme on a platform such as Envato which in some way guarantees you some security. If you release on an open platform such as Wordpress, then it’s a free for all. Only my thoughts.
irrelevant question…Does Envato pay for this, or is it a volunteer act?
Envato are not going to pay for anything related to authors uploading items
As far I know, you can’t keep same name, if you are an exclusive author in Envato. You need to put either “pro” or “lite” with the name. If you first submit to envato, then wp org version will be “something lite” and if the item was submitted to org first, then the envato item name will be “something pro”.
It would be better to contact the support, IMO.
