WPBakery Page Builder now requires active "support" to auto-update? Really?

This seems a bit of a “low hanging fruit” tactic for a large dev to force their already paid-up customers to pay for “support” they don’t need to facilitate auto-updates

Update failed: Automatically updates for the plugin are available to the clients with a valid support period - you can renew it here. To update manually, visit our customer center to download the latest version.

We’ve bought a this plugin for wordpress here at Envato’s. Up until the latest version, we were able to do all the regular updates. Now I can’t unless I renew for the support. It says I need an activate support license (I have it activated the actual) I think this is not something usual in any of my previous purchases with none of plugins, themes or even graphics. I see this as an illegal issue to the inicial contract!

Can anyone explain this?

It’s not an illegal issue as some authors already started “subscription” system to offer unlimited updates.

If you want to stick with the regular updates, you don’t need to renew your support but you will have to wait for the author to update the item at the Marketplce. It’s usually couple of months delay with every update.

It’s impossible for an author to provide “unlimited” updates for free ( with only one payment ) It’s either that way or the author will ignore the item updates.

On top, WPBakery is pretty out-dated front-end editor, Elementor/Gutenberg is more popular, for long-term, you may consider to change your theme front-editor to another other options if it comes with it, otherwise considering to change the theme.

This has nothing to do with a bundled “theme” version of WPB. We purchased it direct from WPB and now they are trying to reverse course on a simple auto-update system that’s built into the sale point and wordpress.

The issue is that they promised free updates and now they are changing the terminology to be “free if you manually update, unless you pay for support”
