You know, price expectations are being pushed down across our industry… in some part as a reaction to marketplaces like Envato, that in turn are an inevitability in a connected, digital world. In our changing industry, with the prices that clients now expect to pay for design work, it’s impossible to create a bespoke piece of design each time. Only at the very high end of the industry is this a valid way of working.
Stock marketplaces help to both create and serve this new paradigm. But what’s clear is that the inevitable accompaniment to a burgeoning stock marketplace is a burgeoning community of people who sort, select and customise those templates for clients who have no interest in doing it themselves, but nevertheless want quality design work at rock bottom prices. The people who do that customising will sometimes be the template author themselves, sometimes not.
Welcome to the brave new world. Like it or not, I think it’s here to stay.
