Ai Images License

I am a self publisher, can I use content created with Envato’s Ai for cover and interior images for my books? I clarify that the images are only to embellish the book, I sell the content of the book and not the images. In case it is possible is licensing available for images created with AI? Thank you.

Is it from Elements or marketplace?

It seems the user is referring to the Envato Labs AI image generator: https://labs.envato.com/image-gen.

You can’t use it.

Output Use Restrictions: You acknowledge that in respect of any Output, you will NOT yourself nor will you permit others to:

  1. sell, modify, re-use, re-sell the Output on a stand-alone basis;
  2. use Output in electronic or digital templates intended for resale or other distribution (for example, website templates, business card templates, electronic greeting card templates, and brochure design templates), but to avoid doubt, such Content may be used for “preview” or “demo” purposes, provided that the Content is not made available as part of the template download;

Hi, thank you for your response.

I would like to clarify one point, as I believe there might be a different interpretation of Envato’s terms of use.

According to Envato’s Terms of Service, AI-generated output can be used to create unique final products, like in my case, a book (including the cover and interior images). The important thing is that the content is not resold separately or distributed as part of a template intended for resale.

In my case, the AI-generated content is neither sold as a template nor distributed separately; it is used within a unique final work (my book), which will be sold as a whole, not the individual images. Additionally, the restrictions mainly apply to the use of content to create reusable templates (like website templates, business cards, brochures, etc.), but they do not prohibit the commercial use of content for unique final products like my book.

In this regard, I was wondering if a specific license is provided for AI-generated images on Envato that regulates the commercial use of these images, similar to how stock images are licensed. If so, could you kindly provide more details on how this license is issued?

Thanks again for your time and assistance!

Envato marketplace terms, Envato Elements terms and Envato AI terms are different from each other and the link I have shared contains the information you have asked - it forbids to resale/sell it on another project, it’s pretty clear.

Hello @federil i just stumbled on your question and read the terms linked by @ki-themes; n my opinion, which is obviously not a legal advice, you can do what you asked, because (pasting from terms, updated on April 16, 2025):

14. Output Rights:

1. General Output Rights: For all Labs Products except InspoGen, in respect of Output generated through these Labs Products, you are granted a non-exclusive, commercial, worldwide, royalty-free and perpetual license to use, modify and incorporate the Output with other content and/or elements, such that a new work is created that is larger in scope and different in nature than the Output itself (this new work being an End Product).

To avoid doubt, Edited Outputs are not considered a new work, or a standalone End Product and must be used and/or incorporated into an End Product that is larger in scope than the Edited Output itself.

From my point of view, your book is the “End Product that is larger in scope that the Edited output itself”.

What is written at comma 16 (Output Use Restrictions) does not apply to your situation, and it’s there very likely because all those uses are actually competition against the main business of the envato platform itself, and it definitely make sense

Anyway, ask a lawyer to read the terms =)

For cover maybe but for interior images, no.

@ki-themes i am not here to start a fight, but if you want to give strenght to your opinions it could be a good idea to provide documentation.. in this specific case just pasting the lines of terms on which your opinion it is based (what I did).

I read carefully and I can’t find a reason because @Federil should not be allowed to use the contents he/she generated. Even because, if those contents cannot be used in any context, what’s the point in allowing users to do that? Pure fun? Wasting resources? Training something? for what?

What is clearly prohibited, the part you have pasted in your previous replies, is about the use for the creation of templates or other “stock” products that Envato sells, implicitly becoming a competitor for their business. And again, that makes sense.

Giving users a platform for text-to-image generation that they can’t use would be extremely dumb for various reasons, just saying some:
1 huge waste of money for envato, this stuff consumes and costs a lot.
2 pissing off their paying subscribers.
3 users will somehow like the generated output, and they’ll quickly switch to some other platform where they can use the contents.

again, the best solution would be asking a lawyer

If the end-products are being used once or twice for the cover or similar purpose, it’s okay but if he/she uses half of the book with AI images, it’s another story and cannot be used.

I’m suggesting this through my experience from the forum and support provided information.
In addition, Envato may have updated their terms at any time.

@federil @0x656b6c It’s a good idea to contact the Envato Labs team by email at labsteam@envato.com. According to their rules, you can use the content to create things like books (covers and interiors). But, as @ki-themes said, using too many of the images might cause problems. It’s better to ask the Labs team directly to be sure.
