I have noticed recently that a lot of websites are using this software
so I was wondering if you would recommend it.

Yes we’re using Discourse 
It does a lot of stuff really well and it’s open source so it’s always changing and improving. As with everything, there will probably be a few things that you won’t like or will find frustrating, but all in all it’s a great forum solution.
