Hi and thank you for this interesting and enticing contest. Love the minimalist interface of the builder. It can definitely use some improvements, maybe some predefined grids for better visual guidance. Maybe if we could set at least top, left, right, bottom and sizing for elements and boxes if guides can’t be easily added. But that’s something that I’m sure will be added in time as Instapage is most likely just starting to grow. So, congrats on this beautiful webapp.
Not, on to the most important issues I’ve encountered and are seriously serious from my point of view:
1. Forms
a.We really need to be able to somehow
adjust the form elements, preferably independently.
For example, it would be really great if we could actually place 2 inputs side by side. In the anatomy of landing pages, every single pixel "above the fold" counts and this could save a lot of vertical space in certain situations. Particularly on Desktops.
b. Also, when adding a form in the mobile version, while previewing the page both in Safari (iOS) an Chrome (iOS) - most likely other browsers/phone too - the text input fields are seriously small in height and fonts inside are like 7-8 px. These really need to scale better on mobile phones, as forms and input are “the heart” of a LP.
2. Fonts and Typography
a. Right now I find it very hard to set different colors inside the same paragraph of text. Even with only a portion of text selected the color changes for the whole paragraph. And that wouldn’t be the biggest issue, what I would really love would be to also be able to change font size per selection, not per full block of text. That would eliminate a whole new element from the pages HTML and only add a span. Would be useful.
b. We need a better selection of font sizes. While on desktop the paragraph sizes are good, on mobile, since we design on @2x, basically we can only go up to 32px which is 16px. There is virtually no way I can add a 24px font, or bigger for something I want to push visually. You could say I can do that with headings but that would not be good. And this leads to point ©…
c. Applying a font to headings… that’s super nice. Now, how do I add a H2, H3, H4 from the editor? OK, as a designer I can work with HTML blocks, regular non-savvy users won’t know how to do that, and our templates’ HTML blocks will look weird and empty and not very intuitive to edit. A regular user will keep adding “Headings” as they see fit, not knowing they’re all H1’s. And we all know that H1’s are like Connor McLeod, “There can be only one!”. We need to be able to add sub-headings for better page structure and obviously SEO reasons.
3. Element Info
Would be nice to have some way of getting info about an item without having to preview > inspect element. Maybe an “Info” button along the “Edit” for each element. And it could return some basic info about it, like (this is important) the element’s #ID. And while we’re here, being able to add custom class names to elements would be pretty awesome and very helpful for designers for adding extra functionality and some visual “bling”.
That’s all that I can think off for now after having worked with it for a day. We’re in the competition. Can’t wait to see this app evolving!
Good luck everyone!
