What is the difference between reject and hard reject?
And how do I distinguish between them?

Hard rejected = no feedback and you cannot resubmit the same item again without significant change and improvement. It will have a response along the lines of “…unfortunately we found it isn’t at the quality standard required,…”
Soft rejected = feedback and the opportunity to resubmit once feedback has been addressed
