Hi everyone! We’ve released some minor changes to Envato Market’s checkout user interface today. We have not made any changes to our fee structure, or how we calculate any of our fees. The goal of these changes is to ensure our UI better reflects our approach to handling fees, and what they represent.
Rather than repeating the handling fee alongside the payment methods, we think it’s clearer and more accurate to always list the final handling fee in the order summary sidebar, even if it’s calculated to $0. We’ve also made sure the handling fee is always visible as a separate line item at the bottom of the checkout screen.
We also thought we’d take this opportunity to clarify what our handling fees are, as there has been some uncertainty about this. If you’re interested in the detail, please read on!
Are these the only UI changes you’re going to make in the purchase flow?
No, we’ve been reviewing other parts of the cart and checkout UI, and there’s still room for improvement. However, we think this change is a good step forward, and it’s ready to launch now.
What fees apply to my Envato Market purchase?
The list price of each item on Envato Market includes payment to the Author of the item for their work, and a Buyer Fee to Envato.
The Buyer Fee helps to cover 24/7 buyer support, fraud protection, item quality control and other related buyer services, and is incorporated into the cost of each item.
We also apply a Handling Fee to your total order (which may include many separate items). This represents the fee we charge for our services in administering and managing our systems as the platform provider, facilitating transactions between author and buyer.
How are Handling Fees calculated?
Handling fees are calculated based on the total shopping cart value, as follows:
- Total cart amounts under $10 USD have a $1 USD handling fee
- Total cart amounts over $10 USD and up to $75 USD have a $2 USD handling fee
- Total cart amounts over $75 USD have no handling fee
As our handling fee structure is tiered and tied to the total shopping cart value for the transaction, the handling fee is not calculable until checkout. Also note that while it’s no longer possible to add new credits, a small number of customers still have credits available for use, and we continue to waive the Handling Fee on orders paid for with credits.
Is Envato going to make changes to the handling fee structure?
We’re continuing to review feedback from both customers and authors regarding our fees, and exploring ways to address the concerns that have been raised. Envato is always looking at product and experience improvements, but we are not looking to revisit the handling fee structure at this time.
If you have any questions about this change, let us know in this thread. Please keep our forum rules in mind when you post, and we’ll be responding to any questions raised here in batches over the next week.
