Support for "freebies"

I am trying to get support on a theme that I got as a “freebie” through the monthly “freebies” offer but the author is requesting a purchase code to even access their support site. I have not received any support on the theme including updates. Maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be but without the updates for the theme it is broken and I’ll need to convert my site. If that’s the case, then that’s the case. I just with I would have know that no updates or support are provided with the “freebies”. Thanks
