Hello CodeCanyon Community,
I’m reaching out to get some advice about a situation I’m dealing with regarding a mobile app I purchased from CodeCanyon over a year ago.
The app has been non-functional since I purchased it, and despite repeated assurances from the author that an updated version was forthcoming, no updates have been provided to date. It appears that the project has been abandoned, as the author is no longer responding to support inquiries or engaging in the support channels.
The app is now outdated, with 9200 errors when loading it into Flutter due to SDK changes. While I’m confident I can fix the issues and bring the app up to date, I’m uncertain about the licensing implications of doing so. Here’s what I’d like advice on:
- Fixing and Updating the App
- The license I purchased (a Regular License) allows modification of the item to create an End Product. Am I within my rights to make the necessary fixes and updates to use the app as intended, especially since the author is no longer maintaining it?
- Redistributing or Publishing the Fixed App
- If I modify the app to create a functioning End Product, I know I can distribute it for free under the license. However, would the original author have any grounds to pursue legal action if I proceed, given that the project appears abandoned?
- Likelihood of Legal Issues
- Practically speaking, if the author is unresponsive and no longer maintaining the app, what is the likelihood of encountering legal issues if I fix the app and release it as a free product, adhering to the license terms?
I value the original work of the author and have no intention of misrepresenting or misusing their efforts. I just want to ensure that I’m staying within the bounds of the license while making this app usable. If anyone has faced a similar situation or has insights into the legal and ethical considerations, I’d greatly appreciate your input!
Thank you in advance for your advice.
