Yes, it might sound like a harsh comment, but it’s his opinion - and he’s entitled to it. I wouldn’t say the entire orchestration is poor - that’s a bit over the top and not very constructive, but I do understand what he was trying to say.
I listened to the track again - here are my thoughts:
I really like the track. It has a great medieval vibe, but there are areas that could be improved upon.
- The flute is quite loud, and quite on-off sounding - maybe add some slight reverb to smooth out the sound
- Some of the timbres coming from the flute are distracting and hurt the track’s commercial viability. I would experiment with some different samples, or at least lower the sound so it sits better in the mix
- There is a low-mid tone in the low drum that doesn’t quite gel with the rest of the track - try EQing it out
- The drums overall are quite dull and dry sounding. I would add some more bass to add body to the sound. You could even add some more drums / percussion to fill out the low end and add some more textures, because at the moment the track sounds a little bit empty
