ps question, ""could not select a layer because the point you clicked on is not inside the vector mask of a visible layer"

Hi -

I usually use fireworks, just learning photoshop CS4; quick question for a few of the files I buy here, instead of clicking on and getting to “select” various elements, when I click on the graphic in PS using selection error it returns error ““could not select a layer because the point you clicked on is not inside the vector mask of a visible layer””; any ideas on how to make it so everything’s selectable/editable?

doesn’t appear to have any layers locked or grouped elements, just returns that error message when I click on the stage, using selection arrow tool … thanks for any tips.

Have you tried selecting the layers you would like using ctrl + click on layers you’d like? ( or cmd + click for mac )

hi - yes, thanks - still not selecting the specific layers, returns that error message…

Click were the arrow shows and hold ctrl for windows and cmd for mac

(You might have already tried this, but a suggestion are a suggestion)

are you by chance using the path selection tool and not the marquee?

Hit “M” on your keyboard and then try again.

or it could be:

Try selecting the layer first and after that ctrl + click the layer’s icon, you might have the layers mask selected.

hey thanks - that helped… seems like ps files have gotten better and more complex, but my learning hasn’t kept up… (I’m a fireworks guy); will have to get some ps cs4 tutorials to get up to speed on all this - much appreciated; looks like to initiate editing on many elements they have to be clicked on in the layers panel on the side, vs clicking on them on the main stage, as I’m used to w/fireworks
