Photoshop question - Overlay in design, how to cut a png of it?

Hello all,

I am stuck with a seemingly basic photoshop problem, I am hoping I can get an answer here,

Ok so the problem is as follows:

I have a photoshop file, in which I have used an overlay layer to add some effect in BG, something like a bookeh.

Now I want only the overlay layer to be separated (as a png)

In order to save with transparency, If I turn of the layer which is below then the colors change.

So how do I put the actual colors in the layer which I want to be saved as transparent png?

note that I want png because it is will be going in an HTML page, so the position of png will not be fixed. The background layer has a mild gradient and the layer which I want to save as png has some big brush strokes (different color) with 0 hardness.

Many Thanks.

You can’t save layer that is set to “overlay” (or any other overlay mode) as standalone layer and still preserve its blending effects. That’s why it’s called blending mode - it defines blending of one layer with others below it, so the layer in question is somewhat dependent. The best workaround would be re-creating the same effect manually, without any blending modes.

Well, thanks for the quick response, I was also thinking the same…

damn, it is going to be a difficult task for me …

I hope that I got the question properly…

Turn off visibility for all layers you don’t need in the background image.

Make a selection and select option Edit -> Copy merged. This should copy visible layers - as a composite image (with opacity).

Open new document, paste the clipboard and that’s it.

He’s asking how to preserve the Overlay blending mode effect, which would go away without a background layer to “blend” to.

Hey thanks for this tip, I didn’t know this either. But for my original question, what themeblvd has pointed out is correct.

thanks everyone.
