… at the moment when you see that bolt how do you know what is about?
When you hover with the mouse over it, you see “Trending item”.
I always go and look what the mouse-over says when there is anything new or unknown. It’s the same with the badges. When I first came to these marketplaces I saw these badges and wondered what it is about. A mouse hover told me that the paws are for how much an author sold (and then I began to look around how much money you can make here)
If any buyer knows what all these badges mean, then most probably because of the hover-text.
It is the same for the thunderbold-icon.

Do you hover over the thunderbolt or over the thumbnail? You need to hover over the thunderbolt and don’t move your mouse for a couple of seconds. It’s a standard mouseover-text, like you have with many images.
This seems to be a neat feature so thanks! Related with this matter, in my opinion there’s still a “special page” missing: Recent Popular Files. It is a page that shows the best selling items that were released in the last 3 months (or another period). Surely simply to add and a great feature for all authors that are currently releasing new themes and contributing for the marketplace improvement!
I like the idea, but perhaps it’d be a lot better if you added a new page similar in layout to the popular page for this on a CMS/category basis, so for example, a user can see what themes are “trending” in WordPress - Portfolio category, and the list refreshes itself quite often.
The popular page should really have extra filters too, I’ve never understood the point in showing global WordPress popular themes, surely it’d make more sense for buyers to be able to see the most popular themes in particular CMS categories.
Browsing in Grid View is very strange… the “Trending” icon on top of the thumbnail not only ruins many thumbnail designs/text but also makes it look like author branding.
Edit: And as Smartik very well mentions below, it opens the door to cheating.
So are these only visible in search? My thinking for the trending items was only for the home page and new items list… so it’s only for new items for a limited time period - 1 week would be good… it was purely to highlight good files that are selling and help them along to get noticed and onto popular pages.
But I see that older files can also have trending, like top sellers - but we know those items are trending because they have their own popular pages… Trending items should be specifically for new items as an additional exposure enhancement - since homepage exposure is less and less these days. This was the original idea from the community, so it’s great to see it partly implemented…
I get the feeling Envato doesn’t want to leave out “popular items” from the trending items idea… so what about having two types of icons… blue lightening bolt for “trending new items” (fast sellers) and red flame for “popular items” (hot sellers)
OMG, already? Some people are way too fast to “hack” the system…
No. That's how it looks in grid mode, right now. But be ready to see this on thumbnails and nobody will notice that it is fake unless it is in 'single column mode'. :P
