For example, one of our latest items has had over 300 sales and 15 five star reviews in just over 2 weeks and it is not considered trending? I would have thought this would be the very definition of trending!

Agreed your file would be a strong contender to be classed as trending. I think Envato changed the algorithm this week because last week it seemed fairly calculated based on rate of sales. Today however I saw one file with zero sales but alot of comments as “trending”, and there was also another file with one sale and also “trending” whereas files with over 100 sales aren’t trending… so something seems strange with the algorithm.
