we have a large nonprofit Wordpress website with 100s of 1000s articles.
Can you recommend:
A, super fast template for article sharing website?
B, is there a way to spread the articles in more databases? For example older than month to have in different database/table so the loading of the site isn’t so slow? (we can’t afford super-fast and expensive servers)

You could always use a cdn and keep your stuff more secure while you operate, but if your planning on having 5 not so good different cheap hosting accounts then your still anyway better to just find a deal somewhere on a VPS somewhere. I know there are some deals out there that would answer your solution you just need to be patient and be ready to jump. I will ask my network and see if I see something for you.

I was hoping splitting the database would work, but I don’t know where to start and I’ll look at the CDN as you suggested.

You can have super fast template but if you have large images and some cheap hosting there is no purpose.
You need to check site and see where is bottleneck on your site.
