Important Changes regarding Sales and Use Tax for Washington and Rhode Island Envato Elements subscribers.

Hi everyone,

Matt here with a quick update for Envato Elements subscribers located in Rhode Island and Washington.

What’s changing?

Recently, both the Washington and Rhode Island Departments of Revenue issued an announcement that changed the responsibility of businesses like Envato when it comes to the collection and submission of Sales Tax for their customers.

The essence of the change was that Envato could either:

Collect and pay Sales Tax on sales to Washington and Rhode Island Subscribers.

Or…

Follow the use tax notice and reporting requirements. This would involve reporting our subscribers to the relevant Departments of Revenue and passing on responsibility of the submission of use tax to our subscribers.

On the back of these changes, Envato has opted to take on the responsibility for collecting and remitting Sales Tax on behalf of our subscribers. It seemed easier than reporting them!

What does this mean for me?

As of the 7th of March, subscribers from Washington and Rhode island will see a change in their recurring Envato Elements billing so as to include the applicable Sales Tax for their respective state. This will happen automatically, based on the billing details provided to us.

What do I need to do?

Not a lot! All subscribers should make sure that the information they have provided us in their billing details are true and correct. Based on this information, Envato will collect and remit Sales Tax on our subscribers behalf, so there’s no further action required.

A record of the Sales Tax that has been collected can be found on your monthly or annual invoices.
If for whatever reason a subscriber is exempt from Sales Tax, they are welcome to provide proof of their exemption to taxinfo@envato.com and we will endeavour to assist
