Freebies - Free Synths

#1

Yeah… why not have a synths topic, as I see that the other ones are so popular

I start quite randomly, from the latest finds, not really having time to put those into categories (additive, subtractive… and whatever).

TripleCheese

TripleCheese is a software synthesizer for PC and Mac Universal Binaries (AU and VST), that gets its sounds using a chromatic comb filter. The plug-in has voice 16 polyphony and is packed with features and comes with loads of presets.

The official description is “luscious cheesy comb synthesizer”

Developed by Urs Heckmann who recently lost his father :frowning:

Sincere condolences and best wishes for finding the strength to prevail. All music makers send you their best thoughts.

~back to the synth now~

The basic idea is this: You have three cheesy modules (hence Triple Cheese!) that either generate sound, or manipulate what’s been created by previous modules.

If you go up one level from the OP-X Free, you get a player with all the sounds, including the patch that Eddie used on Jump. The Oberheim original was a great synth, and this is a great sounding synth plugin. I use it all the time.

Glad to be helpful Matt :), here’s some more stuff to fool around with:

Some very nice synths that were commercial, became freeware.JX Plugins made some years ago very powerful synths. Now are available for free on their official webpage.

"JX Synth 1.2 is a VST 2.0 compatible software synthesizer with a unique sound and a fresh interface which sets it apart from other VST synths. It boasts Fully Customizable Midi Control, New High-Quality Anti-Aliasing Oscillators and a flexible and intuative architecture, yet still manages to maintain its position as one of the lowest priced VST instruments on the market. Quote of dejans

Btw, here's an oldie from me called AVALON. I made this VSTi in 2008 i think, not very optimized, it was sort of an experiment, but nice if you want some raw sounds... :)

Best synth I never had to purchase

I’ve always felt like I must be missing something with Crystal, I have never really found a patch on it that I would actually use.

Slats

As part of "Legacy donationware plugins from SoundFonts.it", ORGANized trio is probably the best simulation of electro-mechanical tonewheel organ of the 50’s, best known as the HAMMOND ™ B3 ORGAN, invented by Laurens Hammond in late 1935.

In that pack there are some bad ass electric pianos, some Rhodes and Wurlitzer simulators (Mr.Tramp, Mr.Ray and Mr.Ray73, Ray stands probably for Ray Charles).

Ohmforce Symptohm:Melohman Performer Edition

Ohmforce are another great plugin company. Free stuff is good, but their paid products are good too and very reasonably priced.

his ‘Performer Edition’ is a simplified version of our Symptohm:Melohman powersynth, especially made for live use - but being also handy at the studio. The core of the synth, its oscillators and all the filters are there: it’s the same audio engine of the ‘normal’ version. The only difference is that they’re all already programmed/fixed for each one of the (up to 1200!) patches from Symptohm’s sound library, the result being a simple and straight forward interface.

So you won’t worry about tweaking knobs in the plug-in interface, being able instead to focus in live preset morphing using your midi keyboard controller and the Melohman feature. The midi mapping for each plug-in parameter is still there too, so map them all and please your crowd with bewildering sounds. Last, but not least, try setting your own samples instead of the default ones, and get an intuitive and fun experience! What are you waiting for? Download it right now and you’ll be playing what maybe is one of the best freeware synths out there…

The standard version of the Symptohm:Melohman is one of the favorite Ohm Force plugins of Stuart Price, who has 2 Grammy awards in his shelf and remixed/produced Coldplay, Madonna, The Killers, among many others. Jordan Rudess, the keyboard wizard of worldwide acclaimed metal band Dream Theater, just said: “every time I turn a knob the coolest strangest things happen, thank you for making a synth that has me joyously bewildered!”. And if you want to see the Symptohm:Melohman in action, just take a look at these three videos, you’ll see what Stuart and Jordan were talking about. Symptohm:Melohman comprises three stages: the synthesis engine, the mixer, and the filter bank. In brief Symptohm:Melohman is a four- oscillator synth: 2 sample-based SyncGrain oscillators (SGOs), a sub, and a noise generator, plus a ring modulator based on the sub one. The sound sources can be processed in a variety of ways before feeding a mixer that supplies a 4 bus filter bank based on our Quad Frohmage plugin, so you know it’s going to sound pretty good. Symptohm:Melohman’s twin main oscillators are sample-based - additional sub and noise oscillators are also provided - so, as you would expect, the results from playing the patches are somewhat different than a synth based on standard waveforms. However, there’s nothing stopping you using samples of sine, triangle, or whatever waveform you fancy, of course.

Symptohm:Melohman offers a range of sounds like you have never encountered before, giving you the scope to create your own unique sound. From spectacular pads to heavy bass, unreal drum kits and strange ambient textures, your playing style will define your sound.
