What kind of support does envato provide for customers how buy templates here? I have purchased several and so far not happy with the support from the template creators. We are told they cannot offer support because Envato won’t let them.

Envato don’t provide item support - that’s all on the authors and outlines here https://themeforest.net/page/item_support_policy
If an author chooses to help beyond the policy guidelines then that’s up to them, but they cannot advertise that as something they will do guaranteed, and buyers can not expect anything beyond those guidelines from them.
If a buyer finds an item is outside of expectations laid out in the terms then envato can action refunds etc. https://themeforest.net/legal/market#buying
